One of the most common questions we hear about Medicare and durable medical equipment (DME) is:
“Will Medicare cover a Rollator walker?”

If you’ve ever looked at these walkers, it’s easy to see why they’re so popular. Rollators are:

  • Easy to maneuver
  • Designed with large wheels for indoor and outdoor use
  • Equipped with a seat and hand brakes for added safety and comfort

But here’s where things can get tricky — Medicare coverage for Rollators is not automatic. Let’s walk through what you need to know.

What Will Medicare Cover?

Under Medicare Part B, standard walkers are typically covered when they are:

  • Medically necessary
  • Prescribed by your doctor
  • Used primarily in the home

However, standard walkers usually refer to a basic metal frame walker — either with no wheels or two front wheels. That is the default equipment Medicare will cover unless otherwise specified.

What About Rollators?

Rollators (walkers with four wheels, hand brakes, and a seat) are considered a specialty item under Medicare.

To get one covered:

  • Your doctor must write a very specific prescription that states:
“Walker with four wheels, hand brakes, and seat.”

Without this exact wording, Medicare will only approve a basic walker.

Why Does It Matter?

  • Medicare will only cover one walker every five years.
  • If you first receive a standard walker, then later realize you need a Rollator, Medicare will not cover a second walker within that five-year window — even if your doctor updates the prescription later.

We often see clients unknowingly accept the standard walker first, only to realize months later they would be safer and more mobile with a Rollator. At that point, it’s too late to get one covered under Medicare.

Our #1 Tip: Plan Ahead!

If you know you need or will benefit from a Rollator:

  • Talk to your doctor up front and ensure they write the correct prescription.
  • Work with a Medicare-approved DME supplier to ensure it is billed properly.

And if you already have a covered walker, don’t give it away — Medicare only covers one every five years, so you may need it again in the future.
