Safeguarding Your Healthcare Decisions

Choosing the right Medicare plan is a significant decision that can impact your health and finances. With numerous options and regulations to navigate, many turn to Medicare agents or agencies for guidance. However, it’s crucial to ensure you’re working with a legitimate and qualified professional. Let’s explore some effective ways to verify a Medicare agent or agency to help you make informed and safe decisions.

Check for Licensing

Every legitimate Medicare agent must be licensed to sell insurance in the state in which they operate. You can perform a license check by contacting your state’s Department of Insurance. The department may provide an online search tool or a contact number to verify an agent’s or agency’s credentials, licensing status, and any disciplinary actions on record. You should always make sure an agent is properly licensed before sharing your personal information.

Ask for References and Reviews

Reputable agents and agencies should be willing to provide references from satisfied clients. Additionally, you can search for reviews online. It is important to make sure that the reviews are through systems that allow you to verify that the review is authentic. If online reviews are either nonexistent or there are validity questions, you should be wary.

Ensure Compliance with Marketing Guidelines

Medicare has strict marketing guidelines that agents and agencies must follow. Be wary of anyone who engages in high-pressure sales tactics, calls or visits you without your permission, requests personal information prematurely or offers free gifts in exchange for your enrollment.

Evaluate Their Knowledge and Expertise

Experienced agents should demonstrate a deep understanding of the various Medicare plans and their benefits and drawbacks. They should be able to compare different plans and explain their features in detail. Don’t hesitate to ask questions and gauge the depth of their responses.

Check for a Physical Address and Contact Information

Many agents do not have a physical address, and this is not necessarily a red flag on its own. However, it can be an indication of huge red flags if combined with other warnings.  For instance, if an agent calls you without permission and represents themself as a government worker,  you cannot verify their license or cannot find them online, and they do not have an office- this can be a huge red flag. Having a verifiable physical office and clear contact information adds a layer of legitimacy to an agent or agency’s operations. A lack of such information, especially in combination with other warnings, should raise questions about their business practices.

Review the Agent’s or Agency’s Online Presence

A professional website and active social media presence can be indicators of a credible Medicare agent or agency. Look for educational content, a history of past interactions, and up-to-date information that reflects their expertise in the field.

Confirm No Payment is Required

Medicare agents should not charge you for their services. Instead, they are paid by the insurance companies whose plans they sell. If an agent requests direct payment for their help choosing a plan, this is not standard practice and should be considered a red flag.

Clarify How They Identify Themselves

Health Insurance agents are licensed professionals and do not work for or represent any State or Federal government agency. An immediate red flag is if someone calls you and claims to work for or represent Medicare, Social Security, or any state government. Such claims are false and significantly violate regulations. Medicare and Social Security do not call Medicare beneficiaries to discuss plan enrollment, and you should immediately hang up if someone claims otherwise. Social Security will sometimes call during your initial enrollment into original Medicare, but they almost always send you a letter first with the exact date and time that they will call. Unless Social Security has notified you of a call, the best practice is to hang up on anyone calling you about Medicare unless you gave them permission to do so.
